早いものでmagical, ARTROOMという少々風変わりな名前のギャラリーが誕生して丸4年近く経とうとしております。いろんな魔術的因果律によって市原研太郎、岡田聡、後藤繁雄、ヒロ杉山、吉井仁実の5人が招集され、今後の日本のアートについて真摯に考えていこうと六本木のアートコンプレックスビルの一角でギャラリー活動をスタートさせたのが、2006年1月のことでした。その当時は、若いアーティストがなかなか作品を発表できない状況であったように思いますが、そんな状況を何とかして打破していくために、才能ある新人アーティストを見つけそして発表させようと、それこそ何かに「呼びかけられ」たかのようにオープンした日のことがまるで昨日の出来事のようです。
お祭りのような日々が瞬く間に過ぎ去り、もともと時限物件であった六本木を後にし、昨年2008年の7月に第2次magical, ARTROOMを恵比寿のナディッフアパートメントの3階で再スタートさせました。またそれに伴い白石正美氏をスーパーバイザーとして迎え、不肖未熟な私岡田が代表となりさまざまな活動を行ってまいりました。
第2次magicalでは、ギャラリーをコマーシャルギャラリーとして成長させていこうという六本木時代からの気運に基づいて運営してまいりましたが、その活動が徐々に実り、いささか手前味噌ではありますがとても有能なアーティストたちと出会い、そして順次彼らの個展をおこなうことができました。そして、私たちのギャラリーから大野智史が巣立ち小山登美夫ギャラリーで個展をおこなったり、大庭大介の個展を白石コンテンポラリーアートと共同で開催することができたなど、開廊間もないギャラリーとしては大変な評価をいただいたと思っております。またFrieze Art Fairをはじめとしてさまざまな世界のアートフェアーに参加し、アーティストと共に『THE ECHO』展や『Mr.FREEDOM X』展などの展覧会を開催したり、また『magical TV』と称してライブイベントを定期的におこなうなど、多方面に渡って充実した活動ができました。そしてmagicalの運営を通じて伊藤悠も、ディレクターとして十分な実力を蓄えるまでに成長したと思います。そのような活動ができたのも皆さまの応援があったからこそ実現できたものと本当に感謝しております。
少々大げさですが当初より私の第2次magicalでの役割は、この時代にとって真に必要とされるアーティストをデビューさせるためのフレームを作ることであると考えておりました。また同時に、ある程度その目標が達成されたおりには代表を退いて後進に譲り、magicalに先立つ2005年の11月から清澄白河でMAGIC
ROOM?としてスタートさせて以来続けているオルタナティブな活動に再び戻ろうと考えておりました。
そして丁度今その世代交代の時期が来たように感じ、まことに突然のことと思われるかもしれませんが、伊藤に今後のギャラリー活動を引き継いでもらうことにいたしました。ギャラリーの継承にあたっては、いろんな方の意見や伊藤の考えもあり、magicalの名称は使わないことになりましたが、ギャラリーの名称こそislandと変わりますが、magicalが作って来たフレームとそのスピリットを継承し、magicalで活動したアーティストたちの受け皿となることで、文字通り若いギャラリストによる若いアーティストを扱う若いギャラリーが誕生することになると思います。どうぞ皆さまのご支援を賜りますようよろしくお願いいたします。
magical自体は新しい形のオルタナティブなスペースを目指してその準備に入ろうと考えております。第3次magicalの具体的な計画はまだ未定ですが、コマーシャルなフレームのなかでは回収しきれないアーティストや、いわゆるファインアート以外の領域で活躍している刺激的な表現者の受け皿となるような混沌とした場所を作っていきたいと考えております。もしかするとmagicalとMAGIC ROOM?とが融合したmagical MAGIC ROOM?という形になるのかもしれませんが、その究極の彼岸はその実現の可能性は別として、私が妄想するmagical HOTELだと思っております。しばらくは、オルタナティブ＆バー「MAGIC ROOM???」（ナディッフアパート4階）での活動を中心に、私なりに第3次magical実現への準備を少しずつやっていこうと考えております。アートの枠に捕われない楽しいイベントや展示などをおこなっていく予定ですので、こちらの方もよろしくお願いいたします。
今時代はまさに千年単位の大きな変革期にさしかかっていると思います。私は、これからの社会にとってアートが今まで以上に重要な役割を担わなければならないと思っており、一人でも多くの人たちがアートに対してリアルにコミットしていくことで、今よりもより善い社会が実現できるのではないかと夢想しております。magicalでの約4年間、本当にありがとうございました。そして第3次magicalの誕生を、ほんの少しでも期待していただければ幸いです。

作家のみんな、スタッフとして関わってくれたみんな、お客様、そして岡田聡さんはじめ運営メンバーの皆様、これまで本当にありがとうございました。
事務局として立ち上げから入らせていただいて、おかげさまでこの4年、本当にかけがえのない経験をさせていただきました。
私にとってはこの関係こそが財産です。
この関係を誇りに思って、今後もアートを広める活動を進めて行きたいと思います。
まずは、1月より「island」をはじめます。
magical, ARTROOMはじめ様々な活動の中でいただいたネットワークや財産を大切にしつつ、より日本の現代を生きる表現者の活動をひろげていくのを、私なりにお手伝いしていけたらと考えています。
立ち上げの場所としては、ご縁あって、Takuro Someya Contemporary Art染谷卓郎さんより「TSCA kashiwa」をお借りし、400平米のスペースを思う存分活用しながら、表現者と共に時代をつくっていく、社会に提案して行くという取り組みを、岡田さん染谷さんはじめ、皆様の意志を引き継ぎやっていきたいと思います。
また、同名の雑誌もつくります。人と人との絆を大切にしながら、動きをあるいは流れをみせ、つくって、伝えていきたいと思っています。
本当に今の時代に必要なもの、表現を、真剣に考え提案して行くのを使命としたいと思います。
私一人でできることはわずかですが、人と人とをつなぎ、想いを伝え、役割を果たして行く中で、今後も私なりに精一杯取り組んで行きたいと思います。
皆様、ひきつづきご指導、ご教鞭のほど、何卒宜しくお願いいたします。

It's been almost four years since a gallery with a rather strange name, magical, ARTROOM, was launched. In January 2006, Kentaro Ichihara, Satoshi Okada, Shigeo Goto, Hiro Sugiyama, and Hiromi Yoshii were brought together by various magical causalities in order to start a gallery in an art complex building in Roppoing, thinking seriously about current Japanese art. In those days, it was not easy for young artists to show their works to public. It seems like just yesterday that the day magical, ARTROOM was set up by us, who tried to discover the new talent and exhibit their work. We just wanted to achieve a breakthrough on the situation of the time.
The busy days in Roppongi, which was time-limited property, have simply flown by. We started the second version of magical, ARTROOM on the 3rd floor of NADiff a/ p/ a/ r/t in Ebisu in July 2008. Masami Shiraishi joined us as a supervisor, and I, Okada, became the president of the gallery. Our activities included various things.
We tried to run the second magical based on the same idea as Roppongi period. I know it sounds a bit self-applauding, but, as we sought to find our way, we have met a lot of talented artists and managed to throw their solo exhibitions. Among our artists, Satoshi Ohno left the nest and had his solo exhibition in Tomio Koyama gallery, and the exhibition of Daisuke Ohba was held in both magical, ARTROOM and SCAI THE BATHHOUSE. As a young gallery like us, I think we gained a fine reputation. Moreover, we participated in major artfairs like Frieze, organized group exhibitions like THE ECHO and Mr. Freedom X with artists, and regularly hosted live event series called magical TV.
Through the management of magical, Haruka Ito has grown enough as a director. I don't think we could have accomplished them all without your support. We greatly appreciate it.
I may be a exaggerating a little when I say that we believed the mission of the second magical was to pave a road for the truly awaited artists to make a debut. Regarding myself, I thought, when we achieved our goal, I would make way for my juniors and get back to be an organizer of alternative events, which I had been involved since I launched MAGIC ROOM? in November 2005.
You may find this unexpected, but I think it is the time for generational change. Ito will take over my position. After the discussion with many people including Ito, I decided not to name the new gallery magical, ARTROOM, but the new name, "island". However, the new gallery will succeed the road magical paved and the spirit of magical, and importantly, it will continue to deal with the artists exhibited in magical, ARTOOM. I believe "island" will literally be the gallery of the young artists run by a young gallerist. I appreciate your continuous support.
As for magical itself, it will prepare itself for becoming a new-style alternative space. I have no idea how the third version of magical going to be, but I' d like to make a chaotic space that handles the exciting artists who cannot simply fit into a commercial frame or categorized as "fine art" artists. Perhaps magical and MAGIC ROOM? will combine into it a space called magical MAGIC ROOM?. But, anyway, apart from this ultimate dream, I think the space will become magical HOTEL, which I have been fantasizing. I will be based in MAGIC ROOM??? (alternative space/ bar on the fourth floor of NADiff a/ p/ a/ r/ t) for a while and step by step, prepare myself for realizing the third magical. I'd like to organize exciting events and exhibitions that are free from merely "being art".
For the first time in a thousand years, we are about to enter the era of a change. I think Art has to play more important role in the society, and the world will become better place if more people really get involved in Art. Again, I thank all of you for support for magical during these four years. And I would appreciate it, if you would look forward to magical on the third stage.

I would like to thank all the artists, the staffs, the clients, and the directors including Satoshi Okada. Ever since I got involved, four years in magical, ARTROOM gave me great experience.
The relationship between me and you all means a lot to me.
Being proud of this relationship, I would like to continue promoting Art.
First of all, I will start "island".
I want to help providing opportunities for the young creators to represent their works by making use of the network and other things I gained through various activities in those four years.
Takuro Someya kindly offered me his 400 m2 space "TSCA kashiwa" as a place to launch "island", from where I am willing to initiate a new era, and keep on proposing opinions to the society with young creators, taking over the will of everyone, including Okada and Someya from January 2010.
I also plan to publish a magazine "island". Valuing the relationship between people, I would like to show our movement, or its process, to the world, make the movement itself, and speak up about it.
I aim to present Art which is necessary for this era, I think sincerely.
There is little thing I can do on my own, but I will do my best to connect people and convey our thought.
I appreciate your continuous support in the future.
