We are pleased to announce that our next show entitled “WORM HOLE episode
10” will open its door on November 24th. 4 directors of “magical, ARTROOM”
select 2 emerging artists along the line with the magical’s manifest.
"WORM HOLE episode 10" is curated in the way the works of the
2 artists, Yoshiaki Kuribara and Hitoshi Kuriyama evoke one magical space
- a unity.
On WORM HOLE episode 10, which is the “final episode” at magical ARTROOM
in Roppongi, we exhibit the works of Yoshiaki Kuribara and Hitoshi Kuriyama.
Yoshiaki Kuribara makes his works questioning himself what to do in this
utopian city, Tokyo. His installation work may seem like a TV set, but
when it starts to play a part in the social world, it crosses the boundary
of meaningless decoration and becomes a work of art. For example, you
can see the severe reality of corn from one of his works, a device of
which popcorns fly up. You can associate popcorn not only with popness
and entertaining element, but also with the social phenomenon like corn’s
rising price （which is because of biofuel, but we are afraid of the fact
that it could become “gold” in near future）and the image of the United
States as its exporter. You would think his work is approachable at first,
but eventually you would realize the serious problem he tries to raise.
Hitoshi Kuriyama, on the other hand, creates a new space in perception,
wielding as his tool fluorescent lights, fuse and LED. He exhibits installation
work made of fluorescent lights, which is cracked and blowing-out. They
are useless as lights, but they do exist as fluorescent lights. You will
feel the transience of disappearing things and the way ambiguous existence
exists. We hope that you experience both Kuribara and Kuriyama’s way of
approaching this modern society.
Both Kurihara and Kuriyama exhibit their works in the solo exhibition
style (Kurihara on the first floor, and Kuriyama on the 4th floor) from
November 24th to December 22nd. From December 30th to January 19th, Kuriyama’s
solo exhibition is held at magical, ARTROOM. It can be seen from outside
during this period.
It is indeed not so simple to predict where the trend of the contemporary
art is headed, and to which direction act to seek representations for
internal entities goes as our contemporary lives are globalized and becoming
more and more dynamic. Knowing it is our reality, we present one of our
suggestions to you.

このたびmagicalでは、新人企画展「WORM HOLE episode 10」を企画しました。magicalのマニフェストに相応しい新人作家を、運営メンバーが選出。しかし、単なる「グループ展」ではなく、お互いが関係し合い、全体として、一つの「magical」としての、インスタレーションとなるようにキュレーションを行います。
六本木での「WORM HOLE」シリーズ最後となる今回は、栗原良彰と栗山斉による展示です。栗原良彰は、ユートピア的な東京の中で自分は何をするのか？といった問の中から作品を作り出しています。一見するとTVセットのようなインスタレーションを提示しますが、無意味なデコレーションであることを超えて、そこに社会的な役割が生まれた時にアートになるのでは、と考えます。例えば、今回展示するものの一つにポップコーンが飛び出す装置がありますが、ポップコーンから連想するポップさやエンターテイメントといった要素と同時に、ポップコーンの原料となるトウモロコシの値段があがっている（バイオ燃料として使われるためですが、このままでは「金」になってしまうという危機感）という社会的な現象や、その輸入先としてのアメリカのイメージというつながりがあります。表面的なとっつきやすさの底にある問題提起を感じ取っていただけたらと思います。一方栗山斉は、蛍光灯やヒューズ、LEDなど非物質的な光や音を使って、知覚の中に新たな空間を作り出します。今回展示する作品は、割れた蛍光管と切れかけの蛍光管を組み合わせたインスタレーションです。それらは照明器具としての役割は終えているにもかかわらず、確かに蛍光灯として存在します。消え行くものの儚さや、曖昧で不確かな存在としての存在のあり方を感じさせる作品です。それぞれの形で、現代社会へのアプローチをしている作品ですので、ぜひ体感していただけたら幸いです。
今回も、11/24〜12/22は1階で栗原良彰、4階で栗山斉の、それぞれ個展形式で展示を行いますが、12/30〜1/19は1階で外からご覧いただく形で栗山斉の展示を行います。
グローバルかつダイナミックな現代の芸術の流れ、その一方での内在的な表現の動き・運動性がどの方向を向かうかを予測するのは難しいですが、我々なりの一つのケースを提示することができればと考えます。
